Bikaner was called a camel country in ancient times. The camel born in America is now not only the backbone of livelihood of the villages of western Rajasthan but is also included in the fixed first line of protection from the neighboring country.

         It is also an important part of the discrete culture of Rajasthan. A camel festival is organized every year in Bikaner to honor the camel. It also started in an interesting way in a city like Bikaner. Actually in the year 1993 Rajendra Singh Shekhawat, a tourism officer of Bikaner, was the chief guest at a function on Bajrang Dhora. Former MLA Nandlal Vyas held the ceremony.

        Here his camel name Kajalia dazzled. Taking this view, Rajendra Singh reached his tourism office. In those days, there was a tourism office in Junagarh Fort.The assistant director immediately planned and sent it to the state government. But a thought is not easy. 

       The reply from the government was that no month is empty according to the tourism calendar. No celebration is possible due to the strong winter in January. On this, the  Singh asked for January itself.

       

        It started in Katariyasar and Dr. Karani Singh Stadium  with some obstacles. According to Jagdish Purohit Khemsa, associated with the start of the event, many obstacles came up for the camel festival. I would like to mention here how much camel is of importance here. In western Rajasthan, especially in Bikaner, camels were a symbol of rich houses. 

          

          

Even a marriageable woman used to tell her mother that she should get married in the same house where there is a  camel. Well, the camel festival had started in Bikaner and it started being organized in the dunes of katariyasar and Bikaner. With foreign guests, people started coming from many places including Delhi, Mumbai, Gujarat, Jaipur. The camel festival quickly emerged on the world tourism map.

 Many interesting events including camel races, fire dances in katariyasar attracted people towards this process which lasted for more than a decade. This was the period when renowned artists from the film world reached Bikaner to perform. Many programs were also held in Junagarh fort campus. The festival used to be three days till this time. One day Bikaner and two days katariyasar. Foreign tourists were involved in large numbers. The time taken by the Camel Festival in 2005 is variable. It is a matter of 2005.

       Foreign couples were artificial hindu custom married in katariyasar. Then the assistant director Hanumanmal Arya got two foreign women and young men married in Hindu manner. I also became a direct witness of this as well known journalist. The popular Marwari songs of Bikaner were sung by Kesariya Lado Jivaton re.

          Tours also took place. The memorable cultural evening charmed everyone. Things changed rapidly after this. After the incident of a young woman running away in the village, people of Siddha community sect staged a protest saying that our culture is being adversely affected. Strike in front of District Collector Office. The strike was lifted only after the camel festival was removed from katariyasar. According to Virender Singh, a specialist of sandy dunes and camel safaris in Bikaner, it was an unfavorable time for the festivities but as usual we moved forward.

ऊंट उत्सव एक रोचक कथा

बीकानेर को ऊंटों वाला देश प्राचीन समय में कहा जाता था। अमेरिका में जाया जन्मा ऊंट अब पश्चिमी राजस्थान के गावो की न केवल आजीविका की रीढ़ है बल्कि पडौसी देश से सुरक्षा की तय प्रथम पंक्ति में भी शामिल है। यह राजस्थान की अलहदा संस्कृति का अहम् हिस्सा भी है ऊंट के सम्मान सजदा के लिये हर साल बीकानेर में ऊंट उत्सव का आयोजन होता है। बीकानेर जैसे शहर में इसका आगाज भी दिलचस्प तरीके से हुआ।

दरअसल वर्ष 1993 में बीकानेर के एक पर्यटन अधिकारी राजेंद्र सिंह शेखावत बजरंग धोरे पर एक समारोह में मुख्य अतिथी थे। पूर्व विधायक नन्दलाल व्यास ने यह समारोह रखा था। यहाँ उनका ऊंट काजलिया गजब का थिरका। इसी दृश्य को जेहन में लिए राजेंद्र सिंह अपने पर्यटन कार्यालय पहुंचे। उन दिनों जूनागढ़ में पर्यटन कार्यालय था। सहायक निदेशक ने तुरंत योजना बनाकर राज्य सरकार को भेज दी। लेकिन सोचा गया कोई कार्य आसान नहीं होता।

        सरकार से जवाब मिला की पर्यटन कैलेंडर के हिसाब से कोई भी महीना खाली नहीं है। जनवरी में तेज सर्दी के कारण कोई उत्सव संभव नहीं है। इस पर जीवटता के धनी सिंह ने जनवरी ही मांग लिया। कुछ बाधाओं के साथ 1994 में कतरियासर और डॉ करणी सिंह स्टेडियम में इसका आगाज हुआ। आयोजन से शुरू से जुड़े जगदीश पुरोहित खेमसा के अनुसार ऊंट उत्सव के लिए अनेक बाधाएं आयी। यहाँ ऊंट का कितना महत्व है इसका जिक्र यहाँ करना चाहूंगा । पश्चिमी राजस्थान खासकर बीकानेर में ऊंट, रसूखदार समृद्ध घरों का प्रतीक रहा। यहाँ तक कि विवाह योग्य एक युवती भी अपनी माँ से यही कहती थी की उसकी शादी उसी घर में हो जहाँ सांड अर्थात ऊंटनी हो।

खैर बीकानेर में ऊंट उत्सव की शुरुआत हो चुकी थी और कतरियासर और बीकानेर के स्टेडियम में इसका आयोजन होने लगा। विदेशी मेहमानों के साथ दिल्ली, मुम्बई, गुजरात, जयपुर सहित अनेक स्थानों से लोग आने लगे। दुनियावी पर्यटन मानचित्र पर ऊंट उत्सव तेज़ी से उभरा। कतारितासर में ऊंट दौड़, अग्नि नृत्य सहित अनेक रोचक कार्यक्रमों ने लोगों को अपनी ओर खींचा यह सिलसिला एक दशक से अधिक समय तक चला। यह वह दौर था जब फ़िल्मी दुनिया के नामचीन कलाकार प्रस्तुति देने बीकानेर पहुचे। जूनागढ़ परिसर में भी अनेक कार्यक्रम हुए। उत्सव इस समय तक तीन दिन का हुआ करता था। एक दिन बीकानेर और दो दिन कतरियासर। विदेशी सैलानी बड़ी संख्या में शामिल होते थे।

ऊंट उत्सव ने 2005 में लिया घुमाव

समय परिवर्तनशील है। बात 2005 की है। कतरियासर में विदेशी जोड़ों का विवाह था। तब सहायक निदेशक हनुमानमल आर्य ने दो विदेशी युवतियों और युवकों का हिन्दू रीति से विवाह करवाया। मैं भी इसका प्रत्यक्ष गवाह बना। बीकानेर के प्रचलित मारवाड़ी गीत केसरिया लाडो जीवतों आदि गाये गए। फेरे भी हुए। यादगार सांस्कृतिक संध्या ने सभी का मन मोह लिया। इसके बाद तेजी से हालात बदले। गाँव में एक युवक युवती के भाग जाने की घटना के बाद सिद्ध संप्रदाय के लोगों ने यह कहते हुए धरना दे दिया की हमारी संस्कृति पर विपरीत असर पड़ रहा है। जिला कलेक्टर कार्यालय के सामने धरना चला। कतरियासर से ऊंट उत्सव हटाने के बाद ही धरना हटाया गया। बीकानेर में रेतीले धोरों और ऊंट सफारी के विशेसज्ञ वीरेंद्र सिंह के अनुसार उत्सव के लिए यह प्रतिकूल समय था लेकिन हमेशा की तरह हम आगे बढे।
